While I would love to take an ad out in the Times, I do not know how feasable
it would be. I think the most important thing to do is to shed as much
light on this phony list as possible. Many people in the archive world
would love to take on the AFI, but for obvious reasons can not publically
say anything. I think the academic community is the perfect vehicle for
exposing the 100 " greatest" films as a paid ad for the studios/& video
chains.
I would suggest contacting any journalist you know to alert them. The
AFI is expert at media manipulation as witnessed by there blitz last year
which convinced every major media outlet that the 1912 version of RICHARD
III was one of the great film discoveries of the century. The big event
when they announce there 100 great films is June 16 so time is short. I am
sure the AFI is counting on tons of unquestioning & positive press, so try
anyone you can to get the word
out.
Here are a few more gems from the AFI's list of 400 great films from which
the 100 will be chosen: BEVERLY HILLS COP, DEAD POETS SOCIETY, THE GOODBYE
GIRL, THE JUNGLE BOOK ( Disney version), THE LITTLE COLONEL & SLEEPLESS IN
SEATTLE.
I trust all of you use these classics in your intro to film classes
