You could look at "A Cinema of Loneliness: Penn, Kubrick, Scorsese,
Spielberg, Altman" 2nd ed. by Robert Kolker. New York : Oxford
University Press, 1988. He does not deal with the films you mentioned,
but talks about Spielberg's tendency to focus on the suburbs and the
nuclear family.
