This message describes how to manage your subscriptions to the various
mailing lists associated with Pegasus Mail: please keep a copy of it in
one of your mail folders where you can find it in future if you need it.
We will send this message out from time to time for the benefit of new
subscribers.

The lists:
----------
Several lists are run by the University of Alabama providing information
and discussion for various versions of Pegasus Mail and Mercury - they
are as follows:

PMAIL information on all versions of Pegasus Mail and
Mercury. Any messages sent to the other lists are
automatically sent to this list as well.
PM-WIN Information about Pegasus Mail for Windows
PM-DOS Information about Pegasus Mail for MS-DOS systems
PM-MAC Information about Pegasus Mail for the Macintosh
MERCURY Information about Mercury, both NLM and Win32 versions.

To send mail to any of these lists, you must be a subscriber (see below).
When you want to send a message to the list for distribution to all its
members, mail it to <listname>@ua1vm.ua.edu. So, for example, if you are
a subscriber to the PM-WIN mailing list and wish to send a message for
distribution to that list, you would send it to [log in to unmask]

Subscribing:
------------
To subscribe to any of the lists shown above, send a message to
[log in to unmask], containing a single line like this:

SUB <listname> <Your_first_name> <Your_last_name>

Example: if your name is "Peter Fish" and you wish to subscribe to the
MERCURY mailing list, you would send a message to [log in to unmask]
containing the following single line:

SUB MERCURY Peter Fish

The List Server will send you a confirmation message that you must
return to it in order to complete the subscription process. This extra
confirmation is necessary to that your address is correct, and to help
prevent automated programs from "spamming" the list with unwanted
advertising. Once the confirmation process is complete, your address
will be added to the list and you will be sent a final confirmation of
your subscription.

Note that you should turn off any signatures or other decorations when
sending these commands; furthermore, if you are using a mailer that can
generate rich text messages, you must turn that feature off as well. The
message must contain exactly one line, exactly as described above.

Unsubscribing:
--------------
If you no longer wish to receive mail from a mailing list, you should
send a message to [log in to unmask] from the address you originally
used to subscribe, containing the following single line:

UNSUB <listname>

So, for example, if you wish permanently to stop receiving mail from the
PM-MAC mailing list, you would send a message to [log in to unmask]
containing the following single line:

UNSUB PM-MAC.

ListServ will remove you from the list and will send you a notification.
Note that you MUST send the request from the address that you used to
send the original subscription request. If you plan to change your e-mail
address, you should unsubscribe from the lists before you make the change
and resubscribe after your address has been adjusted.

Note that you should turn off any signatures or other decorations when
sending these commands; furthermore, if you are using a mailer that can
generate rich text messages, you must turn that feature off as well. The
message must contain exactly one line, exactly as described above.

Stopping mail without unsubscribing:
------------------------------------
If you want to stop receiving mail from a list for a short time (for
example, when you go on holiday) send the following message to
[log in to unmask]:

SET <listname> NOMAIL

So, for example, if you are subscribed to the PM-WIN mailing list but
want to stop receiving mail from that list while you are on holiday, you
would send a message to [log in to unmask] containing the following
single line of text:

SET PM-WIN NOMAIL

ListServ will send you a confirmation that mail has been stopped, but you
will still be a valid subscriber to the list. To start receiving mail
from the list again, send the following message to [log in to unmask]:

SET <listname> MAIL

Using digests:
--------------
Digests are a handy way of receiving the messages from a busy list in a
more manageable form: once a day, you will receive any mail sent in the
previous 24 hours as a single MIME digest. Pegasus Mail handles the MIME
digest format particularly well, making it a natural and pleasant way to
handle lists that have a large volume of mail.

To turn on digest support for a list, send a message to
[log in to unmask] containing the following TWO lines:

SET <listname> DIGEST
SET <listname> MIME

So, for example, if you are swamped by the traffic on the PMAIL mailing
list, and would prefer to receive it in digest format, you would send a
message to [log in to unmask] containing the following two lines:

SET PMAIL DIGEST
SET PMAIL MIME

General notes:
--------------
When sending subscription commands, you must send the commands to the
address [log in to unmask], not to the list itself.

You must turn off any signatures or other decorations when sending these
commands; furthermore, if you are using a mailer that can generate rich
text messages, you must turn that feature off as well. The message must
contain only the commands described in the relevant section above.

If you have problems with your subscription to any of these lists, you
can send mail to Richard Stevenson ([log in to unmask]) or to
Andrew Morrow ([log in to unmask]).

The Pegasus Mail and Mercury mailing lists are kindly operated by the
University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa: we would like to thank the
management of UA for their generosity, and James Ford for his ongoing
assistance and support in maintaining and supporting these lists.
