In the course of the last eighteen months, the costs of supporting
Pegasus Mail and Mercury have increased dramatically for a number of
reasons. I have absorbed these increases in cost and workload during that
time, but simple economic reality has finally caught up with me and as a
result, I find myself in a position where I am forced to make a certain
number of changes in the way Pegasus Mail is supported and financed.

In line with my desire to keep Pegasus Mail and Mercury available as
free services for all people who need them, I have tried to keep the
changes to a minimum: in particular, the Pegasus Mail and Mercury
software itself will remain available free of charge without restriction
to all users. Effective from June 5th 1997, however, the following
changes will come into effect:

1: Technical support
--------------------
Although I regret having to do this, we will now be restricting the
supply of explicit technical support to people or organizations who have
licensed manuals from us. To offset this, we will be making much greater
efforts to ensure that aggressively-updated FAQs are publicly available,
and will continue to monitor news groups and mailing lists to ensure that
we remain aware of the major issues confronting our users. This change in
policy is retroactive - that is, all existing license holders are
automatically entitled to obtain technical support from us.

2: Manual pricing and freight
-----------------------------
As the manuals and software have grown in size, so have the costs of
producing and shipping them. In particular, we have experienced
remarkable increases in the cost of courier delivery over the last year.
In order to offset some of these increases in cost, single-user manuals
will increase in price from US$35.00 to US$39.95. Multi-user manual sets
will not change in price, but shipping will now be an extra added to the
purchase price, ranging from US$15 to US$45 depending on the items and
quantities ordered. Against these price increases, all manual licensees
will be eligible to receive technical support, and we have abandoned the
credit card surcharge we had previously applied.

3: Electronic manual versions
-----------------------------
We are currently exploring the practicality of offering electronic
versions of the Pegasus Mail and Mercury manual sets at a slightly lower
cost than the paper versions. The aim is to offer a manual that the user
can receive within 24 hours of ordering it, across the 'Net. We do feel,
however, that we need to proceed rather cautiously with this option,
since the manuals are the only source of income available to allow
Pegasus Mail to continue development, and we have to be sure that
electronic versions are supplied in a manner that has a minimum risk of
compromise.

Pegasus Mail is largely a labour of love for me, and I have no intention
of commercialising or otherwise restricting its availability for all who
need it. On occasions in the past, people and organizations with views
like mine have kindly offered sponsorship for some of the more
significant expenses I encounter while supporting Pegasus Mail, most
notably the costs of running my Internet link (New Zealand has some of
the highest costs and lowest performance of Internet access in the
Western world). While I am uncomfortable and hesitant about asking for
such sponsorship, I cannot deny that I would be grateful for any support
of that kind that might be offered.

Finally, to anyone who might be inconvenienced by any of these changes,
my sincerest apologies. My personal preference would be to make the
entire system available completely without charge, but I simply do not
have the financial resources to be able to do that and maintain the
quality of the service we provide.

Cheers!
