                                            CALL FOR PAPERS
                   ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE ASSOCIATION
                                        MONTREAL, CANADA:
                                             MAY 10 - 12, 1997

                               CINEMA AND THE STEREOTYPE

*Stereotype, cliche, commonplace: few critical terms are so ill
defined while grouping so many different areas of study, whether in
the social sciences (where the notion of stereotype is used) or in
literature and the arts (where all of the aforementioned terms are
often used as synonyms). This conference seeks to question this set
of terms and notions via cinema and its neighboring media
(advertising, television, video, etc.). From "type casting" to
mise-en-scene, from the circulation of narrative schemes, themes and
ideologemes to the spectator's activity, the main objective of this
conference is to examine the function and the diversity of the
stereotypic phenomenon in relation to film. This conference will also
be the occasion for studying the specific stereotypes (or cliches)
which are active in culture at large as well as within film and image
culture: where do they originate from? How did they become
stereotypes? What is their discursive, social and cultural value?
What role do they play in the study of film history? We are
encouraging proposals from different perspectives (formal/rhetorical,
ideological, feminist, semilogical, historical, etc...) in order to
engage a thorough debate over the issue of stereotypes in cinema
studies.

*Please submit a 500 word proposal (including your name, affiliation
and position) by NOVEMBER 12, 1996 (use either surface mail, fax, or
e-mail) or address inquiries:

I'm only saying this 'cuz I wish for the best
 When you stay in self-incarceration
 I think it's such a shame.

 Don't stay home..."
