Has anybody mentioned YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (Mel Brooks) yet?
This is definitely pre-1980...
...and what about theory of the grotesque? You might want to check out a
classic book by the German critic KAYSER on the subject (I don't know
about any English edition). He seems to stress the Romantic concept
of the grotesque, while Bachtin has different opinions in RABELAIS
AND HIS WORLD.
