"Conference on "Georges Melies and Cinema's Second Century"

Conference Organizers: Jacques Malthete and Michel Marie

from 13 to 22 August 1996 at the Cultural Centre of Cerisy-la-Salle (Manche)

1996: One hundred years earlier, at the family estate in Montreuil-sous-Bois,
George Melies gave the first turn of the crank of the camera for a body of work
that would found cinematic spectacle.

Fifteen years after a first conference at the Chateau de Cerisy on "Georges
Melies and the Birth of Cinematic Spectacle" (August 1981), a second conference
at the same locale will be the high point of the centenary of UNE PARTIE DE
CARTES (1896), the first effort in a long series of over five hundred titles
produced by the "Melies Production Company of Films for Cinematographe (Patented
Manufacturer)."

This conference, which will be quite international since it includes German,
American, Belgian, Italian and Dutch historians, will provide an opportunity to
sum up the current state of Melies research by bringing together myriad
approaches: technical, economic, thematic, aesthetic.

During the conference, the entirety of saved and restored films by Georges
Meleies (more than 180 titles) and Gaston Melies (12 titles) will be projected.

For information and registration, write to : CCIC, 27 rue de Boulainvilliers,
75016, Paris, France (telephone: 33-1-45-20-42-03)."
