There was a post in the rec.arts.movies group about the origin of the
term trailer.  Now i've always thought the name came from the fact that
they trailed the first feature in a double bill but somebody else
claimed that they were shown after all the films.  So:
 
1.  Where did they actually appear in the film program?  For that
matter, what was the common order for double features?  B-film first or
second?  Where did the newsreels go?  Cartoons?  Shorts?
 
2.  When did trailers first appear?
 
 
Does anybody know any sources for this sort of cultural history?
