In general there are few sources other than VARIETY for distribution
gross (that is, film rental transmitted to the distributor).
 
Distributors gross is only one measure of "economic success."  A cheaply
made film that does moderate business can be more profitable than a more
expensive film that does somewhat more business.

Yes, your's is a problematic assumption.  But a more detailed answer
would require more time and space.  As a start: what are the criteria
for "importance" and "relevance"?
