Welles liked mirrors (see "Lady from Shanghai") and refused to ever be nailed
down on any specific meaning. My feeling is that Citizen Kane is about the
search for Kane's identity; by reporters, by friends of Kane and by Kane
himself. The mirrors reflect the endless possibility of "image" of a man.
No one image will ever be complete as a portrait. At the end of the movie,
the last shot is of a gate at Xanadu which reads: "No Trespassing", implying
that you can never really get inside and know the true Kane.
