I contacted Jeff Ruoff a short time for bibliographic info. on The American
Family, which I will be using in a documentary course. He sent me the
The original tapes are not in distribution, although they are available in
libraries, including the New York Public Library. *An American Family
Revisited* is in distribution, however. Contact the directors, Susan and
Alan Raymond, at Video Verite, 927 Madison Ave., NY, NY 10021.
For a preliminary bibliography of contemporary reviews and essays, see *Pat
Loud: A Woman's Story* published in hard cover in 1974 by Coward, McCann &
Geoghegan and in paperback by Bantam Books. Anne Roiphe's article "An
American Family: Things Are Keen But Could Be Keener" in the Feb. 18, 1973
issue of *The New York Times Magazine* was the longest single essay
published during the broadcast, widely read at the time. The
November/December issue of *Film Comment* has an article on the series, an
interview with Pat Loud, and an interview with the Raymonds and John Terry,
who shot the Super-8 footage of Lance in Europe.
You might also look at producer Craig Gilbert's "Reflections on An American
Family" in Studies in Visual Communication 8, no. 1 (Winter 1982), which is
excerpted in Alan Rosenthal's anthology, *New Challenges for Documentary.*
Should you wish to contact Jeff Ruoff directly for more info., he is in
Iowa City for the summer and will be teaching at Vassar in the fall. His
current address and phone: 527 E. College St., #2, Iowa City, IA 52240,
