Film and TV Studies Discussion List <[log in to unmask]>
text/plain (44 lines)
I don't want to get into a formalist argument about what kind of questions and
answers are appropriate on the list. BUT I did think that ssomeone about 20
posts ago got it right about women and money. 1st of all whoever made the
was completely vague about her/his purposes. But 2nd I started to think of
and then I started to have trouble coming up with a film with any woman
at the center that wasnm' about women and money. THAT IS NOT A QUESTION just a
musing. There are the films with imagaes of women rolling in money literally,
(indecent proposal), losing money they were born with (gone with the wind),
scrimping and saving it (white men don't jump, alice doesn't live here any more,
every film with ellen burstyn) willing to do anything to get it (double
the lady eve, christmas in connecticut, working girl, the grifters, how to marry
millionaire, gentlemen prefer blonds, every movie with barbara stanwyck orthe
wicked girls of the '40s--sometimes despite their love of money they deside to
love gary cooper or some other sap more than the money at the end and sometimes
girls with trust funds who don't know what to do with it(bringing up baby, my
man godfrey, maid to order), girls who don't have any and are all the purer and
sweeter for it (holiday affair, bachelor mother)
the list could go on and on. women who marry for it. women who need it.
women who kill for it. women who die for it. you get the drift.
one could be crassly materialist and suggest that women in films are what
money can buy, so of course they go together. (commodification) or that
women and money are what men most desire so of course they go together or
something like that.
it's friday so i can spend a few moments musing on it!
have a good weekend y'all
