I do think this Olympics provides us with an excellent opportunity for
exploring the construction of such concepts as "Olympic ideal" and
"amateur" (how many amateurs compete in $13,000 dresses while being
featured in three commercials running at the same time as the event,
as Kerrigan did)
And how about such concepts as "overcoming adversity." Again,
Kerrigan coming back from her attack by the three stooges was a bigger
story than Duncan Kennedy, the American luger who was attacked by
skinheads while defending an African American teammate. And why is
Dan Jansen's one gold medal after choking repeatedly a bigger story
than Blair's sustained excellence?
