I was going to dignify this with the appelation "ABSTRACTABSTRACTABSTRACT,"
but I'm not even far enough along to say that with any justification for
my presumption.
Basically, I just saw *The Fisher King* and *Untamed Heart* in short
succession, and recognized a trope we've been dealing with here in a course
on feminist film theory and the Victorian novel -- that of the spy. In
particular, the spy who is excused his voyeurism because he is "a good guy."
In *Untamed Heart*, we have a"sensitive movie" about a guy who secretly follows
a co-worker home every night; he follows her through good neighbourhoods
and bad, through deserted streets and deserted parks. However, because he
(Christian Slater) saves her (Marisa Tomei) from a rapist, he is excused his
voyeuristic spying on her.
In *The Fisher King* we have a "literate movie" about with a main character
(possiblt THE main character -- Robin Williams) who follows a woman around
every day; he knows where she lives, where she works, when she takes which
subway, when she takes lunch, where she goes for lunch, etc ad nauseam. And
because everyone believes him "nuts," that's just fine by the audience.
