The Ohio State University Master of Arts in Film Studies
The Ohio State University is now recruiting the second cohort for its new Master of Arts degree in Film Studies. Film Studies at Ohio State (https://film-studies.osu.edu) is a multicultural, international, and interdisciplinary program, which approaches cinema as both art and as international social practice. OSU Film Studies is committed to the recruitment of a diverse student body. Students seriously interested in applying to our program may also apply by September 22, 2017 to the OSU Office of Diversity and Inclusion’s Graduate and Professional Student Recruitment Initiative, which hosts a major campus visit recruitment event annually. The next Diversity and Inclusion recruitment event will occur on October 29-31, 2017. Information about this program is available here: https://odi.osu.edu/for-students/graduate-professional/gps-recruitment-initiative/ and https://odi.osu.edu/assets/pdf/GPS/GPS-2017-Info-Flyer.pdf . Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the Film Studies program early in addition to applying to the GPS Recruitment Initiative so that we may support your application.
The M.A. at OSU will give students substantial advanced training in film analysis, history, and theory, and afford students an opportunity to learn about various film-related disciplines in order to make an informed career choice. This degree is designed to prepare students for careers in many non-production, film-related fields, including development, distribution, journalism, archival work, film programming, and marketing. We welcome applications from students who have some background in film studies but whose undergraduate major was in a non-film studies department (English, History, foreign languages & literatures, Art History, etc.) and who are looking to re-orient their career trajectory or to prepare for further study: the M.A. in Film Studies will provide a well-balanced foundation for students seeking to apply to highly competitive Ph.D. programs in cinema and media studies.
Students pursuing the M.A. in Film Studies at Ohio State will take four core courses in film history, film theory, and film language, and at least six elective courses concentrating on specific traditions, critical schools, directors, genres, production contexts, or screenwriting. These electives, one of which must be a course in film production, come from the Departments of Comparative Studies, Eastern Asian Languages, French and Italian, Germanic Language and Literatures, History of Art, Slavic and Eastern European Languages, Spanish and Portuguese, Theatre, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, as well as the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design. Film Studies M.A. Students will be required to show proficiency in one foreign language, and will complete a thesis before graduation, under the tutelage of one of the more than 25 tenure stream faculty members who teach in our program. (See our faculty profiles here: https://film-studies.osu.edu/directory?field_people_terms_1_tid%5B%5D=9).
The City of Columbus offers students access to a vibrant and varied set of film, video, and new media programming and events, and the OSU Film Studies program has very close ties with the Wexner Center for Performing Arts (http://wexarts.org/film-video), the Gateway Film Center (http://gatewayfilmcenter.org), the Journal of Short Film (http://thejsf.org), the Cohen Media Group (http://cohenmedia.net), the Columbus International and Video Festival (https://www.ccad.edu/experience-art/columbus-international-film-festival), the Columbus Moving Image Art Review (https://movingimageart.wordpress.com), and Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (http://www.cartooncrossroadscolumbus.com), among other local film and arts institutions, publications, and annual events.
