The College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah seeks applications and nominations of highly qualified individuals for the Raymond C. Morales Post-doctorate and Post-MFA Fellowships.
The Raymond C. Morales Post-doctorate and Post-MFA Fellowships (named in honor of Professor of Graphic Design, Raymond C. Morales—the first tenured faculty member appointed in the CFA from an underrepresented group) are designed to promote diversity within the College faculties by encouraging graduates from underrepresented groups who have completed a terminal degree to pursue careers in university teaching. The CFA Fellowships are two-year residencies, and up to three scholars or artists may be appointed. Pre-doctorate fellows (ABD) devote the bulk of the first year to the completion of dissertation work. In the case of applicants who have completed their terminal degree (MFA, PhD, DMA), fellows will devote their activities the first year to building their professional portfolios. Also during the first year of residency, all fellows will teach a reduced load each semester as a faculty member in one of the College’s academic units. The second year of residency will be spent on academic career development while teaching an increased load each semester. Awards will be made in major disciplines in the fine & performing arts and related interdisciplinary fields. In particular, the CFA is interested in candidates who work in one of the following fields—Contemporary Ballet/Modern Dance, Narrative Film/Film Production, Graphic Design, or Trumpet—but is open to all areas of the arts.
Eligibility:
The fellowships will be awarded to applicants from underrepresented groups—including, but not limited to, racial or ethnic minorities, first-generation college graduates, women in predominantly male fields and vice versa, and individuals with disabilities.

· All citizens or nationals of the United States regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, gender identity or expression
· Individuals with evidence of superior academic/artistic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors, or other designations)
· Individuals awarded a doctorate (or ABD) or MFA degree no earlier than December 31, 2009
Criteria for Selection:
The following will be considered as positive factors in choosing successful candidates:
· Evidence of superior academic/artistic achievement in their chosen field
· Degree of promise of continuing achievement as scholars/artists and teachers
· Likelihood of using the diversity of human experience as an educational resource in creating curriculum, teaching, and scholarship
· Sustained personal engagement with communities that are underrepresented in the academy and an ability to bring this asset to learning, teaching, and scholarship at the college and university level
· Membership in one or more groups whose underrepresentation in the US professoriate has been severe and longstanding
Review panels may also look at additional factors such as the likelihood that the applicant will fully utilize postdoctoral support for the duration of the two-year term of the award.
