The Impact of Netflix

Netflix has enjoyed tremendous success over the past decade. In that period, the company transitioned from a dotcom novice to a market leader in the new media economy. Netflix, during that same time, fundamentally transformed the home entertainment market, first by pioneering a DVD-by-mail rental plan and then again by introducing an on-demand streaming service. As part of its success, Netflix has also been at the center of debates about the changing value of film and television as commodities, and about the larger challenges posed by new technologies and shifting consumer behavior. This workshop aims to discuss the specific impact of Netflix and to facilitate a broader debate about the changing nature of distribution and exhibition. In addition to questioning specific economic and technological issues, the workshop is interested in addressing how this changing landscape will affect traditional disciplinary and pedagogical approaches to film and media.

Possible Topics:
How has Netflix’s overall strategy evolved as it shifted its focus to streaming?
How has the success of Netflix’s streaming service affected the value of secondary exhibition windows?
Will Netflix be able to compete with the major studios and premium cable channels as they develop their own exhibition platforms?
Are other major technology companies – i.e. Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon – a threat to Netflix’s current position?
Will Netflix’s reliance on Internet service providers and the availability of broadband lead to its downfall?
How will contracting exhibition windows affect consumer demand?
What role did the consumer electronics industry have in Netflix’s success?

If you are interested in participating in this workshop, please submit a 200 to 300 word proposal and a brief bio to [log in to unmask] by 10 August 2013.
