In conjunction with the release of a new edition of Television: Critical
Methods and Applications, we have updated our popular frame-grab tutorial:
http://tvcrit3.tvcrit.com/content/view/58/102/
The tutorial provides step-by-step instructions on how to obtain a single
frame from a DVD or VHS videocassette. It is designed for teachers and
students wishing to make fair-use illustrations for the analysis of
television and film. Consequently, we emphasis low-cost or free
software/hardware solutions for this process.
Among other things, the tutorial covers:
*Importing video stills into your computer from DVDs
*Importing video into your computer from analog sources (basic instruction
on how to connect a VCR or DVD player to a computer)
*Increasing the resolution of your captures through image-enhancing software
*Coping with copy protection
*Using digital-video editing software to obtain frames (emphasizing Adobe
Premiere Elements for Windows and iMovie for Mac)
*Optimizing screen and print formats for Web design and hard-copy printing
Moreover, the tutorial is published under a Creative Commons license
permitting educational and other non-commercial duplication, if proper
attribution is given. An easy-to-print version of the tutorial is available
here:

A second tutorial on capturing and using motion video is under development.
It still has some rough edges, but may be found here:

These tutorials are a byproduct of the preparation of the textbook, Television:
Critical Methods and Applications (Erlbaum, 2007). Its third edition has
just been released. Ordering information -- including instructor copies --
may be found at:

Please let us know what you think of the tutorial!
