Any open list like this is, of course, extremely unscientific and prone to all kinds of fiddling around. When TIME had a website poll for nominations for its Person of the Century, the leading candidate for some time was Kemal Attaturk, thanks to an influx of nominations from Turkey!

This list is off IMDb, based on how well they're films get rated. Maybe Spielberg is not as popular as people think he is. I've never heart of Ryazanov, Parott, Cline, or Mallet, though. (No, it's not a typo for Mamet.)

"But since in fact we see that avarice, anger, envy, pride, sloth, lust and stupidity commonly profit far beyond humility, chastity, fortitude, justice and thought, and have to choose, to be human at all...why then perhaps we *must* stand fast a little--even at the risk of being heroes." --Sir Thomas More, _A Man for All Seasons_, by Robert Bolt
