How about Wong Kar-Wai ("ChungKing Exspress", "Fallen Angels")?
His movies are not exactly heroic bloodshed, except maybe his debut
movie "As Tears Go By". I guess you could say that his movies are more
"arty". But if there is a true auteur on the HongKong  moviescene, it is
definetly him.
