Mari Maasilta responds to my earlier request for introductory texts that
focus on non-Hollywood film:

>I wonder if you'll find any "standard film history" telling the
>history of film in Asia, Latin America and Africa (Europe surely!)
>to use for your class. But if you do, I would be very interested to
>hear about them, too. When you have got more answers, could you post
>the list to Screen-l or directly for me.

>I can propose you only the books like: Roy Armes, Third World Film
>Making and the West. Berkeley, University of California Press, 1987.
>and maybe Manthia Diawara, African Cinema, Politics and Culture, Indiana
>University Press, 1992.

>Greetings from Finland

>Mari Maasilta
>University of Tampere

These are all useful suggestions that had crossed my mind, but I wonder
how they'll play with a largely ethnocentric group of freshmen inclined
to look askance at the prospect of reading subtitles for a whole term.
There is very good coverage of names and films in David Cook's HISTORY
OF NARRATIVE FILM; an interesting emphasis on film movements and
stylistic trends in Bordwell and Thompson's FILM HISTORY: AN INTRO-
DUCTION; and a sociological slant to Robert Sklar's film history book.

But all of these texts do emphasize American films. Is there something
more portable, but still accessible to freshman, that concentrates on
films (especially post-WWII) outside Hollywood?
