An excellent book, HOLLYWOOD IN CRISIS: CINEMA AND AMERICAN SOCIETY,
1929-1939 by Colin Shindler (Routledge, 1996), views the film industry in
the economic, social, and political contexts of the time, without falling
into easy reflectionist conclusions, as many studies of this type tend to
do.
