Position Open:  Executive Director
Location:  Los Angeles, CA


The Executive Director of the Association of Moving Image Archivists 
(AMIA) leads, plans, and directs the work of AMIA, the largest 
non-profit (501 C-3) professional membership association for 
individuals and institutions concerned with the preservation of 
moving images. The Executive Director oversees the Association's 
mandate to advance the field of moving image archiving by fostering 
international cooperation among those concerned with the acquisition, 
preservation, exhibition and use of moving image materials. The 
Executive Director works under the general supervision of the AMIA 
Board of Directors, and has overall responsibility, as well as 
delegated authority, for planning and formulating policies and 
procedures for the Association, for setting its goals and objectives, 
for developing and directing the Association's activities in support 
of its members, and for the oversight and administration of programs 
and operations related to the advancement of the field.

We are seeking a creative, entrepreneurial thinker who can build 
relationships within the moving image archival community, a person 
with vision and a passion for the mission of AMIA. 


The position is responsible for directing all AMIA programs and activities.

The AMIA Executive Director plans, directs, and manages AMIA's 
resources, programs and services to assure that the Association is a 
major contributor to national and international efforts to develop 
the moving image archival profession. The position is responsible for 
AMIA budget planning and execution, workforce planning and 
management, policy administration, and operational processes. 
Oversees evaluations of current and proposed programs and operations 
and initiates, modifies, recommends and discontinues activities as 
appropriate. Sets priorities and ensures that work supports the 
mission and goals of the Association, its membership and Board of 
Directors. Oversees the management of the technical, human, and 
financial resources necessary to achieve the Association's goals. 
Ensures that deadlines and reporting requirements on funded projects 
are met.

Conceives, plans, and develops new and innovative programs, 
processes, and techniques for managing AMIA programs. Applies 
knowledge of evolving trends and best practices in the moving image 
archival field. Exercises flexibility in meeting emerging needs and 
challenges. Leads AMIA's contributions to the ongoing 
professionalization of the moving image archival community.


In collaboration with the Board of Directors and the Development 
Committee, the position is responsible for conducting fund-raising 
activities and developing private/public partnerships and 
sponsorships to support the Association's activities and programs on 
national and international levels.

The Executive Director develops and leads outreach efforts and 
collaborations with external communities of partners, sponsors and 
supporters in fostering and promoting the growth of its membership 
and developing its membership programs. Seeks outside funding and 
cultivates relationships with potential donors and partners in 
support of AMIA goals. Carries out special projects with related 
organizations, foundations and other agencies on projects and grant 


In conjunction with the Board President (elected by the membership 
for a two-year term), serves as a principal liaison and spokesperson 
for the Association on all matters related to its activities.

Maintains the highest professional standing in the audiovisual 
archival community and sustains the prestige of the Association 
throughout the profession. Explains and promotes the programs of the 
Association using print, media and other outlets, including 
briefings, seminars and symposia. Collaborates with other archival, 
cultural and educational institutions in the U.S. and abroad.  Leads 
innovative AMIA efforts and special projects with institutional 
partners, consortia, and other archival organizations to promote the 
goals of the AMIA membership and the moving image archival field as a 
whole. Ensures that AMIA is a major contributor to such efforts 

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with 
various high-level individuals, other organizations, executives of 
major corporations, and distinguished members of the public. 
Establishes and maintains close and cooperative working relationships 
with professional peers, government agencies, private foundations, 
and other institutions with related interests.  Ensures close 
coordination and regular communication among AMIA's President, 
officers, Board of Directors, staff, and committee chairs on the 
status of the Association's work activities and programs. Provides 
leadership, policy guidance and assistance to AMIA volunteer 
committees and interest groups.


The position supervises AMIA staff as well as potential consultants, 
contractors and temporary employees.

Manages staff time and delegates administrative responsibilities 
among core staff to maximize office productivity. Establishes 
performance expectations for staff members, which are clearly 
communicated. Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates 
staff and volunteers on organizational performance. Takes personnel 
actions as necessary. Provides advice and counsel to staff members 
related to work and policy matters.

This position is responsible for working in collaboration with the 
member-elected Board of Directors to formulate and administer 
policies affecting the mission of the Association.

Develops, conceives, plans, and implements innovative policies and 
guidelines in support of the AMIA's mission and objectives. Explores 
and prepares long-range development plans, as well as short-term 


o	Bachelor's degree required.  Graduate degree in related field 
(media; library, archival, or information studies; nonprofit 
management; arts administration) preferred.
o	ASAE or Archival Certification encouraged.
o	Demonstrated leadership ability, flexibility and creativity. 
o	Experience in non-profit management, volunteer management, 
fundraising, and policy development.
o	Strong organizational and project management skills.
o	Persuasive oral and written communication abilities. 
o	Ability to speak to large audiences.
o	Background in working with a diverse body of cultural 
heritage institutions, including those outside of North America.
o	Background in public policy, publishing, education, or event 
planning encouraged.
