Rethinking Early French Cinema with Richard Abel
Saturday 21 June 2003, 10.30-15.00
National Film Theatre, London
Inspirational film historian Richard Abel, University of Michigan,
presents a generous selection of rare Pathe and Gaumont films
that show the diversity and sophistication of early French film
production. The two 90-minute programmes feature a variety of
genres and forms, including two extraordinary films about cinema
itself: Leonce Perret's MYSTERY OF THE KADOR ROCKS (1912),
in which film is used to cure amnesia, and Louis Feuillade's THE
TRAGIC ERROR (1913), in which a jealous husband misinterprets
a film image of his wife.
Rethinking French Cinema, a popular series of Saturday events
combining screenings and discussion, is organised in collaboration
with Michael Temple, Birkbeck College, and Michael Witt,
University of Surrey Roehampton.
