What strikes me is that only one silent made the list (two if you count 'The
Jazz Singer'. Presumably the selectors were making their choices based on what
they had actually seen, and, given the relative difficulty involved in getting
to see anything pre-1930, 'Birth of a Nation' was the only one to make the list.
