Joshua Hirsch comments:
"On the other hand, wasn't a preoccupation with machinery a characteristic of
much early modernism, including the Soviet avant-garde?"

It was. But also later modernism as well--the interaction/interrelation
of humans and machines is a common theme in the works of Thomas Pynchon,
although their emphasis has shifted greatly from V. through GRAVITY'S
RAINBOW and (now) MASON & DIXON. (Realizing that this is leading us away
from film, per se)

Don Larsson, Mankato State U (MN)
