It was.  But also later modernism as well--the interaction/interrelation
of humans and machines is a common theme in the works of Thomas Pynchon,
although their emphasis has shifted greatly from V. through GRAVITY'S
RAINBOW and (now) MASON & DIXON.  (Realizing that this is leading us away
from film, per se)
