Does the British 'borstal' count as a prison? If so, we can include on the
list Alan Clarke's 'Scum' (1979) - surely one of the most grim accounts of
life inside. So grim, in fact, that I believe an earlier version was made
as a TV play - and then banned - by the BBC...
