For Sean Atkins -- Other sources you might want to consider for your PBS
research include anything written by Patricia Aufderheide on the subject;
there's one good article that I know of in the Columbia Journalism Review
from 1991; generally, she writes for The Progressive. Any broadcasting
textbook can give you the structural basics you need. Carolyn Brooks just
completed a Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on the
early years of NET, PBS's precursor; it's good for background and probably
available through interlibrary loan from your library.
