1995 AMIA Conference
October 10-14, 1995
Toronto, Ontario
The fifth annual conference of the Association of Moving Image Archivists
will be held in Toronto, from October 10-14, 1995. The Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation will serve as host for the event, which will be held
at the Crowne Plaza Toronto Centre Hotel. Using the theme, "Preserving the
First 100 Years: A Changing Field, An Evolving Profession," the conference
is being planned as both a celebration of the first century of moving images
and an evaluation of the rapidly changing field of moving image archiving.
The full range of issues involved in collecting, storing, preserving and using
archival moving images will be discussed in an ambitious schedule of panels,
presentations, workshops and symposia. The five day program will offer
sessions on: national preservation initiatives in the U.S. and Canada; the
history of the television archival movement; economical environmental
control; multimedia publishing; the history of amateur film; automatic
indexing; the preservation of U.S. newsreels; film cleaning equipment and
agents; innovative approaches to accessing moving images; new archival
facilities in North America; moving image advertising; the value of television
news in understanding culture; moving image archival training; the current
status of digital formats; acid detection strips; the preservation of American
and Canadian documentaries; copyright research; and, rights to privacy of
individuals.
Other highlights of the week will include:
* a one day basic training workshop on standard archival practices and
policies for collection maintenance and handling, preservation and cataloging;
* a half-day symposium on advanced techniques in film restoration, including
presentations by representatives from archival laboratories throughout the
U.S. and Canada;
* mini-workshops on cataloging rules, selection criteria, and the philosophy
of archiving;
* a three day vendor exhibit room, featuring some of the latest commercial
products and services available to archives;
* a series of "Centenary Lectures" commemorating the 100th anniversary of
moving images;
* visits to several archival institutions, and a walking tour of restored pictur
palaces in downtown Toronto;
* and many special events, including a closing night gala at the Hockey Hall
of Fame, and a bus trip to Niagara Falls.
The Conference is open to all, regardless of membership in AMIA.
Registration fees for the full week (including continental breakfast and lunch,
Wednesday through Friday) are as follows:
