Last year Ellen Seiter published a book on advertising and children's
television called...er...dang...the title just slipped my mind.

and television production companies promote and market their presentations
through advertising and the agency of toys and competitions.
 
eg. Ninja Turtles films were promoted with toys, & competitions;  books and
films based on each other are marketed in particuar ways;  some sporting
leagues are marketed through cards, etc.
