The American Studies Program of DePaul University seeks applications for a
tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate level.

Required: Ph.D. in American Studies or appropriate discipline with
interdisciplinary dissertation.  (Ph.D. in hand by September 2000)
Evidence of commitment to excellence in undergraduate teahing.  Research
agenda.

Desired specialty(ies) include: Urban, Race & Ethnicity, Popular Culture
(especially as it intersects race, ethnicity,gender, sexuality).

Job Description: To teach American Studies undergraduate major and minor
courses (including core courses, methodologies, and special topics
courses) and American Studies courses in the Liberal Studies* (general
education) program.  To actively participate in the activities of the
American Studies Program and its multidisciplinary Program Committee of
faculty--including curriculum development, special events, faculty
development, program promotion, and student advising.  Possibility of
arrangement to teach disciplinary courses in appropriate department(s)
and/or in other interdisciplinary programs.

*DePaul University's commitment to its urban, Catholic mission is
evidenced in the design of its general educaiton program, in which
candidates are expected to teach and for which they are invited to develop
new courses.  Opportunities include first year urban based
courses--Discover Chicago and Explore Chicago, first year Focal Point
Seminars--focusing on a single topic from multiple perspectives, second
year seminars in multiculturalism, amd third year experiential or service
learning courses.  The American Studies Program also offers "Domestic
Studies," travel/study courses in U.S. destinations.
