A SHORT GUIDE TO WRITING ABOUT FILM by Timothy Corrigan is a useful and relatively inexpensive book that my students seem to benefit from. It has good, short introductions to the basic elements of film analysis and the basic critical approaches. It allows me to demonstrate the difference between reviews and critical essays, though, like most books of this type, I don't find the sample papers particularly helpful.
