1) Lecturer
(Communication/Media Studies)

SCHOOL OF LANGUAGE LITERATURE AND PERFORMING ARTS

Applications are invited for the position of Lecturer in
Communication/Media Studies, within the School of Language, Literature &
Performing Arts.

The successful candidate will have a PhD, and expertise in the areas of
media theory and criticism, and preferably one or more of the following:
media history, cultural studies and the media, the political economy of
media institutions, global media, intercultural communication.  Duties will
include the teaching of courses at all levels, including postgraduate
supervision.  Proven ability in lecturing to large undergraduate classes is
essential.

The Lecturer will have strong interdisciplinary interests and an interest
in contributing to further developments of the University's new programme
in Communication Studies.

The salary range for a Lecturer is $45,000 to $55,500 per annum.
Appointment will be made at an appropriate step in this range depending on
qualifications and experience.

2) Professor
 (Communication Studies)

DIVISION OF HUMANITIES

The Council of the University invites applications for a foundation Chair
in Communication Studies, in the Division of Humanities.

The role of the appointee will be to bring together staff from a variety of
disciplinary backgrounds (Film Studies, Linguistics, Media Studies) in the
delivery of a new Bachelor of Arts programme in Communication.  The
appointee will also teach core papers in communication theory and research
methodology, steer the further development of Communication Studies,
particularly at postgraduate level, and provide leadership and mentoring
for other staff involved in the delivery of the Communication Studies
programme.  In addition, the Professor of Communication Studies will be
expected to build links with the local and national business communities,
and to foster the development of collaborative relationships with external
bodies and institutions, both in New Zealand and abroad.

The University is seeking a leading scholar with a record of international
research publications, with primary expertise in communication theory and
research methods, and secondary expertise in one or more of the following
areas: intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, language
and discourse analysis, mass communication, media systems, nonverbal
communication, organizational communication.

The salary range for a Professor is $86,500 to $106,500 per annum.
Appointment will be made at an appropriate step in this range depending on
qualifications and experience.  The position will be available from 1
February 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter.
