I would also highly recommend Thom Andersen and Noel Burch's documentary, Red Hollywood, which offers a look back at the influence of communism and left politics on Hollywood during the 1950s. Unlike many treatments of this subject, Burch and Andersen refuse to minimize or disavow the impact of left ideology on films of this period. Many critics of HUAC (including former blacklistees) claimed that their persecution by the committee was unwarranted partly because the influence of politics on their films and/or scripts was negligible. Red Hollywood excerpts and analyzes many of the films listed by Peter Warren (as well as many others), focusing on those in which Party members or sympathizers play key roles (as opposed to those which merely reflect the political climate of the time). The film is accompanied by a book by the same title which, thus far, has been published only in French. I'm not sure what distribution of the film would be like in Australia. -Steve Anderson >> Can anyone help me with titles/texts on Hollywood's rendition of the >> fear of communism during the 50s?
