My answer was hardly definitive--just a lead.

I wrote the following:

All I know about "narcosynthesis" is that it's the supposed
explanation for Joan Crawford spilling all to her shrink in
Curtis Bernhardt's _Possessed_ (1947).  Doane mentions it in
_The Desire To Desire_.
