Indeed there was a lovely new 35mm print screened in New York but like much of the highly publicized efforts to support "film" this does little good to most of the film going public. The new 35mm was paid for by Fleet Bank as part of I believe 7 titles they are paying for new prints on. First of all why in the hell should a bank have to pay for a new print of one of the most important American films ever made. Why doesn't the studio or rights holder have one ? In any event these " new prints" will, based on previous experience, be available only for a limited time to a very select group of venues. The VAST MAJORITY of Colleges ,, Musuems and Theaters will have NO ACCESS to this print. Paramount has virtually eliminated its classics division. A few weeks ago they could not even find a print of ROMAN HOLLIDAY for a theater and shipped another one the dubbed print of THE CONFORMIST. All of the above relates to 35mm in 16mm as previously noted the situation is worse. Paramount says it has no negative for Nashville and the existing prints have died a natural death. That pretty much ends any FILM screenings of Nashville on a college campus and the reasons for this are repeated with literally thousands of other titles. As noted in my earlier long & depressing missive, I live in New York so I can see Nashville. My sympathy to the rest of you out there.
