CALL FOR PAPERS BREAKING THE BOUNDARIES: THE STIRLING DOCUMENTARY CONFERENCE, to be held at the University of Stirling: 28-31 January 1999 The electornic journal SCREENING THE PAST intends to sponsor a panel during this conference, and will publish the papers from that panel in a special issue later in 1999. The panel will be called `After Grierson', and will concern, not Grierson personally, but what happened in the institution of film as a result of his intervention. Contributions might consider: - the people who worked with or for Grierson (Harry Watt, Stuart Legg, Paul Rotha, Humphrey Jennings, Alberto Cavalcanti, Len Lye, Lotte Reiniger, Norman McLaren, etc), what they did after they left the organisations that he led, how their film practice changed as a result and what influence they had in their new environments... - the countries Grierson visited and what happened there after he left (South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, India)... - the influence of people who were influenced by Grierson (e.g Stanley Hawes advising the governments of Morocco and Singapore)... - the influence of the `documentary idea' in other forms (documentary series, animation, multimedia...)... - the influence of the institutionalisation of alternative forms like documentary and abstract animation... So - this is a CALL FOR PAPERS for such a panel.
