This is enlightening--thanks! In fact, isn't this a lot like the 100 Great Books? Every canon has its powerplays, politics and price. In books, women are missing, and when there, they are mostly PD (public domain--no royalties; also, conveniently, dead). A recent book on women writers dated 1994 has NO women of color except Toni Morrison (Nobel oblige, I guess...) True, she only refers to women born until 1931, but where then are Zora Neale Hurston? Audre Lorde? Adrienne Rich? Similarly with film: almost no women, and certainly no independent (in every sense of the word) woman! Not to mention films independent of major distribution, mainstream politics, etc. Liora Moriel Comparative Literature Program University of Maryland 2107 Susquehanna Hall College Park, MD 20742-8825 [log in to unmask] "We have cooperated for a very long time in the maintenance of our own invisibility.
