Actually I was going to post a version of my rant on Screen L but thanks for getting it out. If it was not clear to any of you. The AFI is doing a big PR push to name the Alleged "100 Greatest " American films. What they do not say is that this is a paid commercial for a group of studios/video companies and stores which pay a lot of money to have their films on the list and will be rewarded with a sticker they can put on the tape. Thanks to Dennis I finally got a list of the 400 films from which they are going to choose the 100. There are NO DOCUMENTARIES, ONE INDEPEDENT FILM and NO FILMS Which have not been released on video. Among the ones includes such classics as PRETTY WOMAN, LETHAL WEAPON, THE JOY LUCK CLUB & PHILADELPHIA. Among those NOT on the list LOVE ME TONIGHT, DETOUR, SHERLOCK JR, THE CONNECTION Etc. EVERY OSCAR winner no matter how mediocre ( Broadway Melody, The Greatest Show on Earth, Around the World in 80 Days) in on the list. Out of 400 films there are only Five which are not owned or at least released on video by one of the paid sponsers. I would hope the academic film community would be up in arms about this. The Millions of people who watch this TV special are likely to believe that these films are indeed the best and chosen by a supposed " Blue Ribbon " panel. The Studios sponsering this farce are the same people who are making it increasingly hard to see anything on real 16 & 35 MM film. Personally I do not think it is possible to influence the AFI, as they are in it for the money but I hope that enough film people will take a stand and publically expose this farce.
