These *are* young teens we're talking about.
 
At any rate, Jack Clayton's THE INNOCENTS is a (Code-era) film that
would not be overtly inappropriate, even if some aspects of the story
might be difficulty.  I do think most kids that age would have more
trouble with James' language, syntax and narrative structure.
 
On the other hand, I wouldn't recommend THE NIGHTCOMERS--the "prequel"
to TTOTS with Marlon Brando and Susannah York--not so much because of
its more explicit sexuality (not much more explicit--less in some
ways--than TITANIC) than because it's not too good.
