Debbie,
you might want to look up "Maenner (Men)," a huge hit movie in Germany
in the 1980s, directed by Doris Doerrie.  D.D. made a few more
successful films in the past fifteen years and is arguably the best
known German female filmmaker in the second half of this century.  For
comparative purposes, you could consider the cinematic works of Thea von
Harbou (she wrote the script to Lang's "Metropolis") and of course the
ominous Leni Riefenstahl -  her only easily accessible film in the U.S.
would be "Das blaue Licht (The Blue Light)."  Tracing the depiction of
gender and sexuality in these films, for example, would be quite
interesting.
