There is an excellent *chaper* on editing entitled "Editing for
interpretation" in -

Douglass, John and Harnded, Glenn (1996), The Art of Technique. Boston:
Allyn and Bacon.

In fac,t the whole book is a refreshing change from mechanistic production
texts, excellent for use in conjunction with the more "nuts and bolts"
stuff.
