Why not just digitally scan the nitrate materials and save digitally? Someone should do a study of why it costs so much to "preserve" films these days. Could "preservation" be paying for things other than the actual cost of running film through a machine? Like academic overhead, conferences, travel, meals, consulting fees, etc. It would be interesting to see some cost comparisons and analyses for various means of preserving film. ---- Screen-L is sponsored by the Telecommunication & Film Dept., the University of Alabama.
