Arthur C. Clarke wrote the novel version of 2001 in conjunction with the filming (which was based on an earlier short story of his). There are some differences between novel and film, but each stands on its own in its own way as the product of Clarke and Kubrick respectively. And, of course, it also aided with the marketing.
