There's an annual 8mm film festival in Ann Arbor, Michigan, that runs concurrently with the famous 16mm film festival at the Michigan Theater. Kenneth Anger makes films entirely in Super 8, and he still turns up every year. A video category was added several years ago, and also a category for Pixelvision (I hope I'm getting the name right) movies and shorts, which are made with a camera originally developed for kids in the 60s. I'm also curious about films made in 16mm that were then transferred to 35mm and shown in major theaters -- THE BROTHERS MCMULLEN, for instance, and THE LIVING END. Critics don't usually seem to mention that in their reviews, which surprises me because the picture quality is so obviously lower, though personally I think that's appealing. I liked the other low-budget touches in MCMULLEN, too, such as taking the characters outside to use natural light (the husband and wife chatting casually in their backyard in the wintertime) -- that's a treat for anyone who's made student films.
