Conference 1997 in Utrecht, the Netherlands
 
At the request of the Society for Animation Studies (SAS) the Netherlands
Institute for Animation Film (NIAF) is organizing the Society's Ninth
Conference in 1997. The NIAF is working together  with the Utrecht
University and The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The organizing committee
is Ton Crone  (NIAF), Dr.Ed Tan (Amsterdam) and Dr.William Uricchio
(Utrecht). The Foundation Raoul Servais, studycenter for animation in
Belgium, Pilot Moscow Animation Studio in Russia and the Surrey Institute
for Art and Design in the United Kingdom are also supporting the
organization of this conference.
 
The conference will be held from 8 to 12 October 1997 at Utrecht University.
 
In order to allow as many people as possible to attend the conference, the
conference will be held in the English language and, if possible, also in
French and German. The central subjects to be addressed are: "The influence
of the European Animation Film" and "Animation Film and the New Media".
However, as always, paper proposals on all topics are welcome. The
conference will cover a variety of critical approaches, genres, and
historical periods and will intersperse paper presentations with filmmaker
panels, workshops, and retrospective screenings of rare and significant
animation films.
 
Anyone wishing to present a paper (30min.) must submit  250-500 word
abstract, outlining the paper's purpose, method and conclusions. Papers
published prior to the Conference cannot be accepted; however, Student
Essay Contest submissions are eligible. Abstracts should be submitted  by
June 16, 1997.
