-Classic Fleischer and Disney Animated Shorts to Be Shown on AFI OnLine Cinema <www.afionline.org/cinema>- Starting June 2, 1997, AFI OnLine, the American Film Institute's Web site, will "screen" two classic animated shorts, Fleischer's MODELING (1921) and Disney's ALICE THE WHALER (1927). The films will be shown via the site's AFI OnLine Cinema, a theater on the site which uses cutting-edge video-streaming technology supplied by VDOnet. With streaming, viewers can watch the film in real time, thereby eliminating the time-consuming downloading delays normally experienced when viewing moving images on the Internet. Until the launch of AFI OnLine Cinema, classic Hollywood movies had never been presented in their entirety with sound on the World Wide Web. Since it began on January 22, with the premiere of the 1916 Charlie Chaplin classic, THE RINK, AFI OnLine Cinema has been a great success, generating a global audience of more than 150,000 people from over 70 countries and extensive news coverage in the U.S., France, Brazil, Australia, Singapore and Japan. In addition to THE RINK, AFI OnLine Cinema has shown Buster Keaton's THE BOAT and Harold Lloyd's HIGH AND DIZZY. Now a global audience will have the opportunity to check out rarely-seen classic Fleischer and Disney animation. Both shorts feature examples of combining animation with live action and represent earlier efforts by the animation masters. The American Film Institute is dedicated to advancing and preserving the art of film, television and other forms of the moving image. AFI's programs promote innovation and excellence through teaching, presenting, preserving and redefining this art form. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AFI OnLine has selected specific people and Web sites to receive relevant information about our site.
