Some others to add to your list might be Julie Dash's ILLUSIONS and
DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST, Zeinabu Irene Davis' A POWERFUL THANG, Amy
Heckerling's FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH and CLUELESS, Kathryn Bigelow's
BLUE STEEL (the subject of many a critical article), Gillian Armstrong's
LITTLE WOMEN (This might allow you to cheat and do one of her Australian
films, such as MY BRILLIANT CAREER or HIGH TIDE), or even Penny Marshall's
A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN or THE PREACHER'S WIFE (if for nothing else than to
show the extreme limitations Hollywood cinema has placed so far one women
who would be auteurs). The best examples of women auteurs are, alas,
non-American (Varda, Akerman, Von Trotta, Campion, etc.)--a fact which is
a lesson in itself.
