Joe Swift 03/10/97 03:11 PM One classic case is the title character of Hitchcock's "Rebecca." She is never seen, yet her "presence" haunts, menaces and motivates the characters who have outlived her. She is dead when the movie begins, but the movie is named after her and she has a name--which is more than can be said for the Joan Fontaine character whom the narrative revolves around.
